A Mix of Vintage Ads Becomes Retro-Style Art

Barbara Winfield creates retro-style art from vintage ads. Since early childhood she has been fascinated by color and design. Born in New York City, she studied Interior Design at The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in NYC, returning several years later as an Adjunct Professor in the Interior Design Department. She later found herself side-stepping into the editorial world, working as an Interior Design Editor for several national magazines.

For several years Barbara has been collecting imagery from 20th century magazine advertising dating back to the 1930s and 1940s. Looking through these magazines she became fascinated with the vintage ads appearing in their pages.

During Covid Barbara had lots of time to reflect, giving her an opportunity to reconnect with her creative self. It was then that she decided to incorporate the vintage ads into artwork combining collage and oil paint on canvas. The result is a body of work that repurposes these vintage ads into a new, colorful art form that mixes nostalgic appeal with a modern sense of humor.

Barbara is currently developing her practice as an artist in her studio in Jeffersonville, New York.
